Solution

To achieve the program required by the client it was decided that the holes had to be trepanned to size in one operation rather than drilling a smaller hole and boring it out to finish size, as would of been the option with off the shelf tooling. We used our machining knowledge and contacts to commission 10 trepanning cutters and paired these with our modular drilling equipment.

Overview

A major European chemical manufacturer was carrying out upgrades on sections of plant in the UK.

Scope

As well as various pipe cutting and bevelling work scopes MOSS were also asked to produce a number 10 diameter holes in 20 diameter x 1 wall carbon steel pipe.

Challenges

A challenging program of works meant that there was a short time frame in which the scope had to be completed. Some of the work locations had tight access restrictions for the equipment.

Achievements

Our modular drilling equipment was able to fit into the space envelope and the design proved robust enough to drive these large cutters. The cutters performed perfectly producing holes to the required tolerance with no further finishing operations required. All holes were completed within the timeframe available.
